Investigation into the Co-combustion Behaviour and Heat Release Rate of Coal/biomass Blends Using Thermogravimetric Analysis

چکیده
Combustion behaviour of coal and biomass are different due to difference in their physical and chemical properties. Thermogravimetric analysis is a useful technique to determine combustion characteristics of coal/biomass blends. This study elaborates the lab scale findings of co-combustion experiments in Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) [in which Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) and Thermogravimetric (TG) measurements could be carried out simultaneously] of different binary blends of an Indian coal and three number of biomass (sawdust, rice husk and corn cob) samples. Conventional TGA parameters including DSC peak temperature, heat release rate, activation energy of different blends were estimated which provided detail information on their basic combustion features. Combustion studies showed that coal/biomass blends gave better performance with respect to coal. Lowering of activation energy and improvement of reactivity in major combustion zone were observed for the coal/biomass blends. Improvement of ignition performances of the coal-biomass blends was also observed with respect to coal. From heat release rate, utilization of such mixed fuel for possible use in power generation could be ascertained. Also from this co-combustion studies as well as study of boiler material and design characteristics, heat transfer scenario can be developed. At the same time old boilers in India can be retrofitted to tackle this new situation of co-combustion.

Studies on the Co-combustion Behaviour of Coal/biomass Blends Using Thermogravimetric Analysis
In relation to future energy demand and fossil fuel crisis particularly in India, biomass is gaining its importance for possible utilization as co-fuel. This study focuses the use of „low temperature biomass char‟ instead of raw biomass in the blends to extract some specific advantages like lowering of grinding energy, intensification of heat energy, proper adjustment of „VM and fuel ratio‟ etc...

The thermal characteristics and kinetics of coal, biomass (pine sawdust) and their blends were evaluated under combustion conditions using a non-isothermal thermogravimetric method (TGA). Biomass was blended with coal in the range of 5-80 wt.% to evaluate their co-combustion behaviour. No significant interactions were detected between the coal and biomass, since no deviations from their expecte...

Biofuel pellets were prepared from biomass (pine, chestnut and eucalyptus sawdust, cellulose residue, coffee husks and grape waste) and from blends of biomass with two coals (bituminous and semianthracite). Their mechanical properties and combustion behaviour were studied by means of an abrasion index and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively, in order to select the best raw materials ...

The thermal reactivity and kinetics of five coal chars, a biomass char, and two coal/biomass char blends in an oxy-fuel combustion atmosphere (30%O2-70%CO2) were studied using the non-isothermal thermogravimetric method at three heating rates. Fuel chars were obtained by devolatilization in an entrained flow reactor at 1273 K under N2 and CO2 atmospheres.Three nth-order representative gas-solid...
متن کاملHydrothermal Treatment of Municipal Solid Waste to Produce Solid Fuel
This paper describes the application of innovative hydrothermal technology on local municipal solid waste (MSW) to produce low chlorine content solid co-firing fuel with coal. Raw MSW was treated at temperatures ranging from 210 to 235°C with 30 to 90 minutes holding period. The process yielded slump products which were then naturally dried to 5% moisture content, resulted in dry products with ...
